Sustainability: Sufficiency vs. Efficiency

This weeks featured discussion is on sustainability: what are some ideas that could be implemented in order to promote sustainability within the modern economy? Thought: If capitalism is dependent on continual growth we will soon run out of resources, is there a way to promote capitalism and sustainability at the same time? i.e efficiency and sufficiency

We will also be highlighting one organization every two weeks that has made an impact in social change around the world. If you would like to nominate a group feel free to post a comment including their website address. Check our blogroll for a quick link.

This weeks organizational spotlight is: Ryan’s Well

Next week’s spotlight: Kiva (micro-finance for the under-privileged)

Thanks to a friend of mine named Duda for bringing this micro-finance organization to our attention; excellent model.

Just for fun: Every two weeks we will also be uploading a portrait of a famous philosopher, social scientist, political scientist or psychologist in the author’s avatar section. See if you can be the first one to identify the picture. Please post your response in the comments section

Here’s a new mystery woman:

Mystery Woman is: Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945. She supported the New Deal policies of her husband, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and assumed a role as an advocate for civil rights. After her husband’s death in 1945, Roosevelt continued to be an internationally prominent author and speaker for the New Deal Coalition. She worked to enhance the status of working women, although she opposed the Equal Rights Ammendment because she believed it would adversely affect women.

Last week’s winner: Brittani

  1. The final current event entry will be a response to the question of sustainability and what are some possible models or ideas we could implement to help in the process towards a sustainable future, in other words how can we become more efficient in the things we do? Example of things to talk about in terms of sustainability include: (environmental, money debt/capital, business, national, state, community) all these topics are open for discussion. You can use real life examples as well…have fun!

Class of 08′ Government/ Economics “Is Da Best!!!”

  2. Final Current Event
We could become efficient to our environment by recycling cans, bottles, papers, plastic bags and etc. By doing that, we are decreasing the amount of waste in our landfills. Also, decreasing the use of green house gases because it affects global warming.
Another thing that we can become efficient is money debt/capital. If we take to time to control our money instead of it controlling us, we could save a lot of money into our savings. Then we could finally invest our money into capitals that will eventually become prosperous making us grow in wealth. In order to have sustainability, we also need to encourage others to do what your doing because one person can make a difference.

  3. Final Current Event

Sustainability means “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”(http://epa.gov/sustainability/) The first thing that came to my mind when I read this definition was the social security issue and the care of our elderly. The more we rely on the government to care for our grandparents the more we are hurting ourselves and the coming generations. Americans need to start caring for themselves and preparing for their future, economically, physically, emotionally, and spiritually speaking. The better we take care of ourselves and build up the future for the next generation by making wise investments, the less jeopardizing our present and future will be. If not all the social security money was not used because families were able to care for their elders, that money could be used for better things or taxes may be reduced. Less money taken out, more money to used to the development of our country.

  4. Thank you Jess, all valid points on personal responsibility and accountability within the family unit. excellent

  5. Final Current Event
Sustainability in its simplest form describes a characteristic of a process or state that can be maintained at a certain level indefinitely(wikipedia). When i think of sustainability i think of everything being well, stable, but then i think of the economy and how everything is growing and is in constant competition. So how can these be combined into one working system?I know this will probably never happen but if the econmy can become stable and then continue to grow at the same rate, things will be stable but also growing.I sustainabilty is a good thing because it can keep things from being unpredictable and we can be sure to invest our money in the things that are most important such as social sucurity or our own personal economic choices.

  6. Sustainability is the standard of living we are responsible for providing for our future generations. Every generation must make preparations to pave the way for the next. I believe that in order to have sustainability we need to conserve our natural resources and only use what is necessary. Which means ease up on the use of things that we don’t really need. We also need to invest in research and other ways to improve living for the next generation.

  7. Daniel hit on a good point…where do we draw the line in terms of consumerism, which is a personal choice and freedom, and at the same time the biggest deterrent to sustainability. Capitalism strives on consumerism but sustainability practices moderation. One will cut profits while the other increases them. In the business world profit is the bottom line.

Any other ideas on how we can address this dilemna?

Environmenatlly though sustainability is much more applicable.
